Summary

Marco Basile

I earned my bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Naples Federico II, where I began my scientific career working on lipid-based and polymeric nanoparticles.
In September 2021, I moved to Barcelona (ES) under the Erasmus+ programme to continue my master’s studies and conduct research with the Molecular Bionics team.
In October 2022, I started my PhD, focused on "Elucidate the transport of misfolded proteins across the blood-brain barrier."

Education

PhD in Biomedicine (Neuroscience field)

2022 - ongoing

University of Barcelona, ES

Currently expanding my neuroscience expertise under the supervision of Professors Giuseppe Battaglia and José Antonio del Río, focusing on neurodegenerative diseases.

Pharmaceutical biotechnology

2019 - 2022

University of Naples Federico II, ITA

Master's degree covering pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, and technology applied to pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical fields. Developed a strong interest in nanomedicine and bioinformatics, which I am further exploring during my PhD.

Health biotechnology

2016 - 2019

University of Naples Federico II, ITA

A bachelor's degree focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cells, tissues, and organisms. This foundational knowledge fosters critical thinking essential for comprehending the causes of various pathological conditions.

Professional Experience

'La Caixa' Foundation - Doctoral INPhINIT fellowship

October 2022 - ongoing

IBEC (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia), ES

  • Investigating the transport mechanisms of misfolded proteins across the blood-brain barrier.
  • Investigating the role of functionalised nanoparticles in modulating the Blood-Brain Barrier.
  • Supervised by Professor Giuseppe Battaglia

Erasmus traineeship

April 2022 - September 2022

IBEC (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia), ES

  • Developed functionalized nanoparticles with multi-ligand avidity to stimulate transcytosis in brain endothelial cells in vitro
  • Supervised by Professor Giuseppe Battaglia

Erasmus+ and apprenticeship

September 2021 - January 2022

University of Barcelona, ES - IBEC (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia)

  • Here, you can download my master thesis.
  • Explored self-assembly techniques for PMPC-PDPA copolymer via bottom-up and top-down approaches.
  • Supervised by Professor Giuseppe Battaglia and Professor Giuseppe De Rosa
  • As part of the Erasmus+ project, I also attended two courses at UB based on Genomics, Proteomics, and Bioinformatics.

Master Internship

2021 (5 months)

University of Naples Federico II, ITA

  • Aim: encapsulate nucleic acids into lipid-based nanoparticles by calcium phosphate inorganic nanoparticles.
  • Supervised by Professor Giuseppe De Rosa

Bachelor Internship

2019 (3 months)

University of Naples Federico II, ITA

  • Here, you can download my bachelor thesis (in Italian).
  • Aim: optimise the protocol to load fluorescent probes into hyaluronic acid-functionalised PLGA nanoparticles.
  • Supervised by Professor Marco Biondi
